Our Methodology
Simple, Transparent Mathematics
CostToKeep calculators operate on a principle of absolute transparency. We do not utilize hidden algorithms, proprietary "cost scores," or black-box artificial intelligence to generate our estimates.
User-Supplied Data
The vast majority of our calculations rely directly on the values you input. Because registrar renewal fees, hosting contracts, and plugin licenses vary wildly across the internet, we do not assume standard costs. If you enter a $20 annual domain renewal fee and a 15% marketplace commission, our calculator uses those exact figures to compute your carrying costs and break-even sales requirements.
Growth Assumptions
When our calculators project future carrying costs (e.g., over a 5-year or 10-year period), we provide an optional field for "Expected Annual Cost Increase." If you leave this at 0%, the calculator assumes flat pricing. If you input a percentage, the calculator applies a standard compound growth formula to simulate price inflation over the specified holding period.
Marketplace Commissions
Our domain break-even calculations are based on gross sale price vs net proceeds. The formula used is: Total Invested Capital / (1 - Commission Rate). This accurately reflects the gross sale price you must achieve before the marketplace deducts its commission, ensuring you do not sell at a technical loss.
